Answers from Mihail Crigan

Frequently asked questions about massage

On this page Mihail Crigan, sports massage practitioner at the Crigan Massaggi studio in Turin, answers the questions clients ask most often: how many sessions you need, how long a session lasts and how often to have one, which products are used and what to expect from massage for cellulite, weight loss and headaches linked to the neck.

1 · Sessions and frequency

How many sessions do you need and how often should you have a massage?

How many massage sessions do you need to see results?

It depends on how severe the problem is, your lifestyle and your age. In Mihail Crigan's experience, people aged 18 to 40 who are physically active usually need about 5 sessions; people aged 40 to 65 who lead a healthy life need about 10 sessions. Every case is different.

How long does a massage session last?

At the Crigan Massaggi studio a session lasts 60 minutes on average and costs 60 €. You can still agree a different length, depending on your needs and availability.

How often can you have a massage?

For massages that target muscle pain, such as deep tissue massage or neck massage, at least 3 days should pass between one session and the next, so no more than two sessions a week. For relaxing massages, such as Hawaiian massage, there is no real limit.

2 · Products and treatment

Which products are used and when can you have a massage?

Which products are used during the massage?

At Crigan Massaggi only 100% pure, organic oils are used. Depending on the technique, essential oils are added, for example sweet orange, lemon, eucalyptus or cinnamon, and coconut oil in the Hawaiian Lomi Lomi massage.

Can you have a massage during your period?

Yes, if the flow is not heavy. The exception is manual lymphatic drainage, which is not recommended during your period: in that case it is better to move the session by a few days.

For muscle pain, is heat or cold better?

If the pain comes from inflammation or an injury, such as a sprain or a strain, cold is better. If the pain is caused by muscle knots and tightness, heat is better.

Cold: inflammation and injuries

Sprains, strains, knocks and swollen, hot areas: in these cases cold helps to keep inflammation down. The massage should be postponed until your doctor gives the go-ahead.

Heat: knots and stiffness

A stiff neck, a rigid back, tight muscles after work or sport: heat eases tension and is the ideal ground for a deep tissue massage.

3 · Benefits and health questions

What can a massage do, and what can't it do?

Does massage help you lose weight?

Massage alone does not make you lose weight. It helps to eliminate excess fluid, stimulates lymphatic circulation and calms stress, which can encourage emotional eating, but to lose weight it needs to be combined with a healthy diet and exercise.

Does massage help with cellulite?

It can help, as part of a course of treatment. Mihail Crigan recommends starting with manual lymphatic drainage, to help eliminate excess fluid, and continuing with Maori massage, which tones the soft tissues.

Can a headache be caused by the neck?

Yes. Tight muscles along the first three cervical vertebrae can cause headaches and sometimes dizziness. If the headache is frequent, very severe or different from usual, see your doctor first; if it comes from muscle tension, a neck massage can bring relief.

Are there contraindications to massage?

Yes, and they vary from technique to technique: among the most common are fever, infectious diseases, cardiovascular conditions, thrombosis, cancer, some skin diseases and pregnancy. On the Crigan Massaggi website, each treatment page lists its specific contraindications; if in doubt, it is best to ask your doctor.

Can a massage practitioner replace a physiotherapist or a doctor?

No. A wellness massage practitioner works in a non-healthcare profession, governed by Italian Law 4/2013, and does not diagnose. When a clinical assessment is needed, Crigan Massaggi offers a consultation with a physiotherapist and a physiatrist, in collaboration with Dr Oriano Casamenti of STUDIO RONEFOR. To find out more, read the article on painkillers and massage.

Do you offer erotic, couples or intimate home massages?

No. Crigan Massaggi is a sports and wellness massage studio at Via Monginevro 76/F in Turin. Mihail Crigan performs only professional treatments (deep tissue, neck, sports, Maori, Thai Oil, lymphatic drainage, Ayurvedic, Hawaiian). No erotic, tantric or couples massages or escort services are offered.
