What it is
Manual lymphatic drainage is a treatment aimed at reducing excess fluid, with beneficial effects on fluid retention and cellulite. It works by stimulating the lymphatic system and helps the body get rid of the substances it is holding on to in excess.
Lymphatic drainage techniques also help firm up soft tissue, with pleasing cosmetic benefits: after liposuction, for example, lymphatic drainage proves useful precisely for firming up the tissue.
At the Crigan Massaggi studio manual lymphatic drainage is done with the Vodder method, the technique Mihail Crigan studied with the DIABASI® school.

Benefits
Manual lymphatic drainage works on fluids, tissues and the lymphatic system. These are its main benefits:
The pumping movements help the body get rid of excess fluid, reducing fluid retention and the feeling of swelling.
The treatment is slow and gentle: it relaxes the muscle tissue and gives a pleasant feeling of relaxation.
Lymphatic drainage stimulates lymphatic circulation and the points through which fluid drains out of the body.
Draining fluid helps counter cellulite and firm up the tissues, with cosmetic benefits too.
Who it is for
A course of manual lymphatic drainage sessions is worth considering in these situations:
You notice that, even though you do not drink much water, you keep having fluid retention and swelling.
Dimples or small visible hollows appear on the skin, the so-called “orange-peel” look.
With large bruises, lymphatic drainage can help drain the area: if the bruise is recent or very extensive, ask your doctor's advice first.
It helps firm up the tissue and prevent fibrosis (permanent hardening of the skin), purplish areas, swelling and oedema. Always agree the timing with the doctor who operated on you.
Pregnant women can benefit from lymphatic drainage, always with the approval of their doctor or gynaecologist.
It is recommended for athletes after a long series of competitions, to support recovery. For preparation and cool-down there is also the sports massage.
The Vodder method
The Vodder method is the manual lymphatic drainage technique practised by Mihail Crigan. In practice, the treatment works in three ways:
They direct the fluid under the skin towards the drainage areas, like squeezing a tube of toothpaste.
The treatment stimulates the points whose job is to let fluid drain out of the body.
The movements are slow and gentle: that is why, as well as the draining effect, lymphatic drainage gives a pleasant feeling of relaxation.
The session
At your first lymphatic drainage session the movements are slow and light: it is not a deep massage. Mihail starts from where you feel swelling, usually the legs or abdomen. Every client is then looked after individually and thoroughly, with the utmost professionalism and discretion. The session has four stages:
Mihail Crigan asks what problems you have noticed, such as swelling, fluid retention or cellulite, about your habits and whether you have recently had a procedure, for example liposuction.
Slow, gentle movements with the Vodder method guide fluid towards the drainage areas. As with every Crigan Massaggi treatment, the only products used are 100% pure organic oils.
At the end you get advice and stretching exercises to do between sessions.
If the complaint needs a closer assessment, a consultation with a physiotherapist and a physiatrist is possible, thanks to the collaboration with Dr Oriano Casamenti of STUDIO RONEFOR.
For pain-focused massages, such as deep tissue or neck massage, it is best to leave at least 3 days between sessions; for relaxing treatments there is no real limit. For lymphatic drainage, Mihail Crigan will suggest the rhythm that best suits your case. You will find more answers on the massage FAQ page.
Contraindications
Manual lymphatic drainage should be avoided:
During pregnancy and after surgery, lymphatic drainage is done only with your doctor's approval. If in doubt, ask your doctor before booking: massage is a wellness treatment and does not replace prescribed care or treatment.
Mihail Crigan's training
The studio's manual lymphatic drainage is given by Mihail Crigan, a sports massage practitioner with the national diploma “Operatore in massaggio sportivo” (224 hours, Palmanova, 2017).
Mihail attended the Vodder Lymphatic Drainage course at DIABASI® Scuola Professionale di Massaggio, so the technique he uses at the studio is the Vodder method.

No, manual lymphatic drainage is not recommended during your period: it is better to schedule the session for another time. Other massages, on the other hand, can be done during your period if the flow is not heavy.
For cellulite Mihail Crigan recommends starting with manual lymphatic drainage, which helps reduce excess fluid, and then continuing with Maori massage, done with wooden tools. The number of sessions is assessed case by case, based on age, lifestyle and the problem.
