Journal · the Crigan Massaggi blog
Whether you prefer morning runs in Turin's Parco del Valentino or trail running on the paths of the Piedmont Alps, running is a sport of high, cyclical impact. Every stride asks your calves, quadriceps, hamstrings and glutes to brake and then push. Understanding this cycle helps you understand where stiffness comes from and when a massage at the studio on Via Monginevro can complement your training.

Running involves a kinetic chain: quadriceps, hamstrings, triceps surae (calf), glutes and tensor fasciae latae. On landing, the quadriceps and calf work eccentrically: the muscle lengthens while it brakes your weight. Straight afterwards, the glutes and calves push concentrically.
Repeated impact on tarmac generates ground reaction forces that can reach two or three times your body weight. After a long run it is common to feel your calves and the outer band of your thigh hard: this is fatigue and micro-stress of the tissues, not automatically a medical condition.
The stride cycle, in brief
The CMS does not host an interactive simulator: the «speed / surface / foot strike» sliders remain a discussion to have at the studio, not a widget on the page.
Among the problems most often mentioned by runners are iliotibial band syndrome, Achilles tendon problems, plantar fasciitis and pain along the shin. Massage does not cure these conditions and does not «drastically» reduce the risk of stress fractures.
Pain in the heel, the knee or under the foot that does not go away: see a doctor. Then, if muscle tension remains and there are no contraindications, a session at Crigan Massaggi can be considered.
At Crigan Massaggi, sports massage (preparation or cool-down) and deep tissue massage are used on the calves, the outer band and the back of the thigh. The aim is to release tight muscles and encourage a feeling of suppleness, not to replace stretching, shoes or your training plan.
Before a race such as the Turin Marathon, more preparatory work makes sense. In the 48–72 hours after a long effort, less aggressive work is preferred. Session: 60 minutes, 60 €, Via Monginevro 76/F, by appointment only.

Before: a preparatory sports massage. Straight after: light work. A more intensive deep tissue massage is considered a couple of days later, if your body tolerates it.
No. It can relieve tension in the sole of the foot and the calf. Fasciitis needs to be assessed by a doctor.
